The gunman behind the Strasbourg shooting has been killed by police, French officials said Thursday.

Chérif Chekatt was killed after a two-day manhunt that involved hundreds of officers. He was reportedly already known to police and was on a terror watchlist.

According to a French official, Chekatt opened fire on police Thursday night and was killed when officers returned fire.

Authorities said Chekatt began shooting at bystanders near a Christmas market in Strasbourg Tuesday evening, killing three people and injuring 13 others. When authorities tried to apprehend him, a shootout ensued. He was injured during the shootout and fled in a taxi.

The French National Police thanked the public for their help in finding the shooter. Five other people have also been arrested in connection with the investigation, including Chekatt's parents and two of his brothers.
