Uber began its fight in court Monday to continue operating in the city of London.

The ride-sharing service is appealing a decision made last year by the city's transportation authority not to renew Uber's operating license.

At the time, Transport for London said Uber was not "fit and proper" to operate in the city, citing safety and security concerns.

On Monday, an Uber official told the court that he accepted its operating license should not have been renewed in 2017. But since then, the company's lawyers pointed out that Uber has passed multiple city inspections with a "perfect record of compliance" and has undergone a number of changes.

Those changes include a cap on drivers' hours, a pledge to report incidents to the police and an overhaul in leadership.

Uber's been allowed to keep operating in London while it goes through the appeal process.

In an effort to prove its reforms are here to stay, Uber is only seeking an 18-month operational license. But on Monday, the chief magistrate signaled that if she were to renew Uber's license, it would be for a shorter period of time.
