An apparent accidental fire gutted much of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris Monday afternoon. While authorities said the structure of the cathedral and many artifacts inside were saved, the building's iconic spire and much of the roof are gone.

David Almacy was near the cathedral when witnesses began noticing something was wrong. In a phone interview with Newsy, he says it was obvious to anyone watching that the fire was spreading rapidly.
