A man identified as a former Russian intelligence officer who used to spy for Britain and a woman who was with him mysteriously fell ill at a mall in Salisbury, England, Sunday.

Here's what we know so far: Local law enforcement is looking into the pair's "suspected exposure to an unknown substance." Officials said in a statement Monday that the two were in critical condition and did not have any visible injuries.

The man has been identified by media outlets as Sergei V. Skripal, who gave British intelligence agency MI6 classified Russian information for a decade. The BBC reports the woman who was with him is his daughter.

Law enforcement hasn't released either of their identities. Officials also have not said much about what happened to the two.

Multiple parts of Salisbury were cordoned off as police investigate, but law enforcement says there "doesn't appear to be any immediate risk to public health."

The New York Times is comparing it to another case of a former Russian spy who was poisoned in London in 2006 and led to "years of tension between the British and Russian governments."
