Haiti's prime minister has decided to step down from his position.

The country's president confirmed on Twitter Saturday that he accepted Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant's resignation.

Haiti's parliament was due to hold a no-confidence vote, which could have forced Lafontant to step down.

The news came after days of violent protests over a now-suspended plan to raise fuel prices. The measure would have increased the price of gas by 38 percent, diesel by 47 percent and kerosene by 51 percent.
