More than a dozen children are dead after an airstrike in Syria's Eastern Ghouta region reportedly targeted a shelter underneath a school. More than 50 others were injured.

It's estimated that more than 1,400 civilians have been killed since pro-government forces intensified attacks on the area in February.

Thousands have managed to escape, though. The United Nations refugee agency reported Tuesday that more than 45,000 Syrians have left Eastern Ghouta in recent days.

The mass exodus comes as Syrian forces gain more ground — they reportedly now control more than 80 percent of the region

Over the weekend, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad commended those advances and told soldiers they're fighting against terrorism.
