Ride-hailing services are looking to hire female drivers in Saudi Arabia after the country lifted its ban on women drivers.

Uber is working on a feature that would help pair female drivers with female riders. The company's main Middle Eastern rival, Careem, has received more than 2,000 applications from women to drive for the company. It has a goal to hire 20,000 women by 2020.

Saudi Arabia was the only country where it was illegal for women to drive. Now, it's seen a flood of interest from women wanting to get behind the wheel.

But a number of Saudi women's rights activists are behind bars. At least six women were arrested in recent months, and at least three of them were reportedly "leading campaigners" in the push to allow women to drive.
