Norway says it will spend a little more than $12.7 million on "technical improvements" to its Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

That's the gigantic vault that stores more than 1 million seed samples from around the globe.

In a statement, the Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture and Food said it plans to add a new access tunnel and service building where backup power and cooling units can be stored.

Some of the improvements are aimed at making the vault waterproof after parts of it flooded last year.
