Italian police are investigating human remains that were discovered on Vatican property in Rome.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Holy See said bone fragments were found during renovations of an annex near the Vatican's diplomatic office.

The Holy See says it informed Italian authorities, who launched an investigation. Rome Police's Scientific Police and Mobile Squad are leading the investigation to determine the person's age, sex and date of death.

But Italian media has already begun speculating that the remains could be those of a 15 year-old girl who went missing in 1983.

Emanuela Orlandi, whose father worked for the Vatican Bank, disappeared after leaving her family's apartment in Vatican City to go to a flute lesson.

The mystery of her disappearance remains unsolved. But as CNN points out, it's been linked to now-deceased mobster Enrico De Pedis. Italian authorities exhumed his body in 2012 but found no clues.

The Vatican did not mention Orlandi's disappearance in its statement.
