The summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will take place on July 16 in Finland's capital of Helsinki.

The White House announced the date and place on Thursday. It comes on the heels of National Security Adviser John Bolton's meeting with Putin in Moscow on Wednesday to lay the groundwork for a summit.

Bolton said "it's important for the leaders of these two countries to meet," adding Trump and Putin believe they can find constructive solutions to a wide range of issues.

Trump and Putin have met before on the sidelines of major world summits but haven't formally sat down with each other like this.

The White House said the two leaders are expected to discuss U.S. and Russia relations, as well as national security.
