UN Says North Korea May Have Helped Syria Make Chemical Weapons

Experts from the United Nations found North Korea has been sending supplies to Syria that could be used in the production of chemical weapons.

North Korea has been sending Syria materials that could be used to make chemical weapons, according to an unreleased report from United Nations experts.

The New York Times reports investigators were looking at North Korea's adherence to U.N. sanctions. They found the Hermit Kingdom has shipped supplies like acid-resistant tiles, valves and thermometers to the Syrian government.

The materials were part of some 40 previously unreported shipments between 2012 and 2017. It's unclear whether North Korea is currently sending supplies.

The New York Times says the report also points out the danger of a relationship between the two countries because any trade could help Syria with chemical weapons and help North Korea keep its own weapons programs up and running.
