The White House says the leader of Al-Qaeda's affiliate in the Arabian Peninsula is dead.
According to a statement from President Donald Trump, Qasim al-Rimi was killed by a U.S. counterterrorism operation in Yemen.
The White House statement didn't say when or how al-Rimi was killed. But it said the operation was carried out at the direction of President Trump.
Last week, The New York Times cited multiple U.S. officials who said they believed al-Rimi died in a January airstrike in Yemen. The outlet said those officials were fairly confident he was killed but were awaiting confirmation before announcing his death to the public.
