With a new year, many in California are celebrating new marijuana laws.

Starting Jan. 1, adults over the age of 21 can legally purchase recreational marijuana in cities that agree to sell it. Voters approved the new law in 2016.

But recreational sales are delayed in many places, including San Francisco and Los Angeles. Local governments are still working to overcome hurdles surrounding the legislation.

California is now the sixth state to legalize marijuana for recreational use. Maine and Massachusetts are on track to do the same later this year.
