Netflix is prolonging its time in the Upside Down: "Stranger Things" has been confirmed for another season.
The Duffer twins — Hollywood newcomers and the creators of the hit show — told Vulture that "Stranger Things" had been renewed for a third season.
Considering the success of the Netflix original, news of its advanced renewal comes as no surprise.
The show has been nominated for 18 Emmys in various categories, including Outstanding Drama Series.
And it's drawn in some pretty high-profile fans.
But the show's renewal comes at a time when Netflix appears to be paring down its original series lineup. The company has canceled at least 18 shows so far this year.
Some notable cancellations include "The Get Down," "Girlboss" and "Gypsy," which were all canceled after one season. "Gypsy" was nixed after just six weeks.
This raises the question: Which shows are safe from the streaming company's ax?
Netflix doesn't disclose its viewership numbers, but back in June, CEO Reed Hastings told CNBC the company would be focusing on fewer shows and embracing those those that reach critical acclaim.
That being said, Netflix is renewing some major original shows for multi-season runs rather than the standard one-season pickup. Some of these shows include "Orange is the New Black" and "A Series Of Unfortunate Events." Both have been renewed for two more seasons.
But don't think this means Netflix is going to invest in "Stranger Things" forever. The Duffer brothers told Vulture the show would most likely end after season four. Considering the horrifying things that have happened in Hawkins, Indiana, that's probably best for the characters.
