Scripps News and Decision Desk HQ project Democratic U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff and Republican candidate Steve Garvey will advance to California's general election for a U.S. Senate seat in November.
All Senate candidates from California are on the same primary ballot, regardless of their party affiliation. The two that receive the most votes then advance to November's general election.
Schiff is a longtime member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Garvey, a Major League Baseball National League MVP, is a political newcomer running as a Republican.
Garvey's showing introduces competition that Democrats in the state haven't faced for a Senate seat since 1988. While Democrats are still widely expected to retain the seat, Garvey being on the ballot raises the stakes for Democrats' narrow majority in the chamber.
This is the first open election California has held for a U.S. Senate seat since 2016.

More than a dozen states are voting across the country, making Tuesday the largest delegate haul on the nominating calendar.
Also vying for a spot on the November ballot were Democratic Reps. Barbara Lee and Katie Porter. Porter won Orange County in 2018 in a new advance for Democrats.
