Arizona Republican Sen. Jon Kyl is resigning.

Kyl wrote in a letter to Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey he plans to step down from his position at the end of the year.

He said in part, "It has been an honor and a privilege to again serve the people of Arizona."

Ducey says he will announce Kyl's replacement "in the near future."

This is the second stint for Kyl in the Senate. He served two terms from 1995 to 2013. Before that he served for eight years in the House.

Kyl's resignation comes just a few months after Ducey tapped him to fill the late Sen. John McCain's seat in Washington, D.C.
