House Speaker Paul Ryan says special counsel Robert Mueller's job is safe amid concerns that President Donald Trump might fire him.

House Speaker Paul Ryan says special counsel Robert Mueller's job is not in jeopardy.

"I have received assurances that his firing is not even under consideration," Ryan said.

"The special counsel should be free to follow through with his investigation to its completion without interference," Ryan said.

Ryan's comments come amid repeated attacks by President Donald Trump on the special counsel's investigation into Russian collusion. Trump's personal lawyer also called for the investigation to be shut down last week.

Ryan's remarks echo those made by White House lawyer Ty Cobb on Sunday. Cobb said Trump isn't thinking about firing Mueller.
