Politico, which cited unnamed sources, reports the pairing of the two could mean Mueller's investigation is heating up.
Manafort hasn't been accused or charged of any wrongdoing. But if he is, President Donald Trump couldn't pardon Manafort over state crimes.
Politico's sources say they think that detail, plus the two legal minds joining forces, could affect Manafort's cooperation in the federal Russia investigation.
