President Donald Trump signed a nearly $1.4 trillion spending package that will fund the federal government for the 2020 fiscal year.

The president signed the two legislative packages on Friday, after both chambers of Congress passed the legislation earlier this week. The move comes on the same day a short-term spending bill was set to expire, averting a government shutdown.

The spending deal, which is comprised of 12 appropriations bills, gives federal workers a pay bump, scraps multiple Affordable Care Act taxes and raises the national tobacco buying age to 21. It also provides millions of dollars for election security spending and gun violence research, as well as billions of dollars towards defense spending and the 2020 census.

The deal also includes $1.375 billion for border security funding, which is the same amount as it was in 2019 and significantly less than the roughly $8.6 billion that President Trump had previously requested. The dispute over border funding is what helped trigger the last government shutdown, which ended up becoming the longest shutdown in U.S. history.
