The New York attorney general's office has discovered roughly $1 billion in wire transfers by the Sackler family. That's according to The New York Times

The Sackler family owns Purdue Pharma, which makes the opioid OxyContin. The company is facing thousands of state and federal lawsuits over its role in the opioid crisis. The wire transfers suggest the family may have tried to hide its wealth while those cases play out.

New York's AG told journalists: "While the Sacklers continue to lowball victims and skirt a responsible settlement, we refuse to allow the family to misuse the courts in an effort to shield their financial misconduct."

The filing comes after Purdue Pharma and members of the Sackler family reached a tentative settlement in lawsuits brought by thousands of municipal governments and dozens of states. But at least 16 other states haven't yet agreed to that deal.

Multiple outlets have reported that tentative settlement would involve Purdue filing for Chapter 11 protection.
