State Department Is Changing How It Does Travel Advisories

The U.S. State Department will assign each country a level between one and four.

The U.S. State Department is changing how it does travel advisories. The idea is to make them easier for travelers to understand.

As of Jan. 10, 2018, every country will have one of four levels that show how severe a country's travel advisory is.

The color-coded levels start at one, which is "exercise normal precautions" in blue. Level 4 is "do not travel" in red.

The State Department can also apply a different level to a certain part of each country, depending on how safe an area is.

All travel advisories will be listed on the department's travel website.
