The U.K. is planning to send hundreds more troops to Afghanistan.

The number of U.K. troops would increase to just over 1,000. It's reportedly the biggest U.K. military commitment made to Afghanistan in years.

This comes as world leaders are in Brussels for the NATO summit.

U.S. President Donald Trump has been calling for member countries to step up their NATO defense spending.

Only a few NATO member countries meet that stated goal of spending two percent of national GDP on defense. The U.S. and U.K. are two of them.

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May is asking NATO member countries to match the U.K.'s two percent contribution.

"NATO is as vital today as it ever has been, and our commitment to it remains steadfast," May said.

NATO officials reportedly say there is a plan in place to address the U.S.'s concerns with defense spending.
