United Nations members have adopted a global pact aimed at helping migrants — despite opposition from multiple countries, including the U.S.

During a conference in Morocco Monday, leaders from more than 160 nations agreed to the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.

The non-binding agreement was finalized in July by all 193 UN members except the U.S. But not all of them formally approved it during Monday's meeting.

The U.S. pulled out of the agreement in late 2017 due to concerns that it undermined its national sovereignty. And other countries — including Australia, Austria and Chile — have followed suit.

As Newsy previously reported, the pact aims for countries to cooperate when it comes to migration, including providing basic services for migrants and making sure they have proof of legal identity and the right documentation. It also hopes to prevent human trafficking.
